The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has awarded a Raytheon [RTN]-led team a two-year, $102 million contract to design, develop and deploy a Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) to help protect the region's four airports.
The contract gives Raytheon additional traction in the U.S. homeland defense and security market where it posted sales between $300 million and $500 million last year.
For the Port Authority project Raytheon is the lead systems integrator in charge of fusing a comprehensive system of cameras, radars and sensors that are linked to a command and control subsystem and provides specific, automatic alarms. PIDS will improve the ability of airport security personnel to detect, track and respond to threats around the perimeter of each airport.
The New York City region's four airports that will receive PIDS are JFK International, Newark Liberty International, LaGuardia, and Teterboro. Each PIDS solution is customized for each airport.
Raytheon's team includes 4D Security Solutions, which is in charge of the advanced sensors, the multi-sensor fusion engine software, and the assessment and facility communications subsystems.
The team also includes:
- Intergraph [INGR] - in charge of the command and control and dispatch system
- Mass Electric Construction Co. - the general and electrical contractor
- AMSEC - in charge of communications and electrical system design
- Goshow Architects - in charge of the command and control room design
In addition to design, development and deployment, Raytheon says its team will provide complete infrastructure development, integrate existing and future access control and intrusion detection systems, and provide training and maintenance. The company says PIDS is the first large scale, fully integrated design and build project at any major airport.
PIDS is designed to meet or exceed an availability standard of 99.9 percent.
